The Chicxulub crater is an impact crater buried underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Its center is located near the town of Chicxulub, after which the crater is named. It was formed by a large asteroid or comet about 11 to 81 kilometres (6.8 to 50.3 miles) in diameter, the Chicxulub impactor, striking the Earth. The time of the impact coincides with the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary (K–Pg boundary), slightly less than 66 million years ago, and a widely accepted theory is that worldwide climate disruption from the event was the cause of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, a mass extinction in which 75% of plant and animal species on Earth became extinct, including all non-avian dinosaurs. . . #Prehistory #Extinction #Asteroid #Crater #Mexico #Yucatan #BirdsAreDinosaurs

The House of Wisdom (Bayt al Hikmah) was a center of learning in #Baghdad during the Post-Classical Era. The city of Baghdad was one of the two shining lights of intellectual and cultural development in the Muslim World (what the AP prefers to call the “Dar al Islam”), the other being the city of #Córdoba in #Spain, or as it was known at this time during the #Islamic period, #AlAndalus. . . . #HouseOfWisdom #Iraq #IraqHistory #Mesopotamia #Abbasid #Islamic #IslamicGoldenAge #BaytalHikmah #بيتالحكمة
The #GenghisKhan Equestrian Statue, part of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex is a 131-foot (40 m) tall statue of #Genghis #Khan on horseback, on the bank of the Tuul River at Tsonjin Boldog (54 km (33.55 mi) east of the #Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar), where according to legend, he found a golden whip. The statue is symbolically pointed east towards his birthplace. It is on top of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, a visitor centre, itself 10 metres (33 ft) tall, with 36 columns representing the 36 khans from Genghis to Ligdan Khan. It was designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal and erected in 2008. . . . #Mongol #Mongols #Mongolia #APWorld #WorldHistory #GlobalHistory

This ETHNIC CLEANSING is happening RIGHT NOW in #China to the #Uyghurs. Count how many parallels you can identify with the #Nazi #Holocaust. Ask yourself, what was the point of learning about all those genocides if we are going to just sit back while #genocide and #ethniccleansing continue to happen in front of us? The Chinese government wants to keep this quiet. If we can’t do anything else, at least we can expose them by making people aware of what is happening. I will post the full video on my website (link in bio) and you can get it there and share it. Take an active role in history. Knowledge is power. Shine a light on the darkness.💡 #uighur #uyghur #xinjiang #eastturkestan #concentrationcamp #concentrationcamps
TFW you have a really important paper to write. Do you think TJ replied heavily on the Thesaurus? Probably for “inalienable” amirite? The Declaration of Independence declares that we have natural rights of #life #liberty and the #pursuitofhappiness but it was also written by a slave owner. Doesn’t really line up. Our nation was founded on some wonderful principles that were in many ways fundamentally at odds with the reality of the United States at its founding. We’ve definitely gotten closer to those ideals since 1776, but how much closer, do you think? How far are we along from where we started to fully living up to the best of our values and ideals? 90% of the way? 40% of the way? 99%? 25%? Feel free to share your number, along with an explanation if you’re up for it, in the comments below. There are no wrong answers! 🇺🇸
Take your best guess. In which country are these camps located? . A) Venezuela 🇻🇪. B) Bangladesh 🇧🇩. C) Jordan 🇯🇴. D) United States 🇺🇸 . . Vote below in comments, and then check my story for the correct answer.
While cleaning out my closet as the year comes to a close, I found these old classwork assignments I had saved from a lesson on the Medieval Church. Though I eventually abandoned the project, I had for a few years had students learn about the role and importance of the preservation of texts in monastic scriptoria by having them copy by hand entire pages out of the Global textbook, including text, images, graphics, and proportions. The original plan was to continue this project over my years as a teacher and eventually amass a completed book. These are a few highlights from the best ones I found. It was a painstaking process but students learned from their own experience just how hard it would have been for monks to copy texts by hand, with careful calligraphy and ornate illumination. This was only one page. Imagine an entire book, or multiple books! #Scriptorium #Medieval #Illumination #Monasteries #Monks #PrintingPress #Parchment #Vellum
Globally, humans are ingesting an average of 5 grams of plastic each week, or the equivalent of a credit card, according to a new study. This plastic contamination comes from "microplastics" -- particles smaller than five millimeters -- which are making their way into our food, drinking water and even the air. "We cannot just remove it. Therefore we need to tackle plastic pollution at its very source [and] stop it from getting into the nature in the first place," said the global conservation director at WWF International, which commissioned the report.
